Dear friends,
This weekend we welcome Fr. Henry Byekwaso to Christ the King. Through the Missionary Cooperation Plan of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis each of the parishes of the Archdiocese annually welcomes two missionaries to speak on the work of the Church in places often times very distant from Indianapolis. This welcome presence of the missionaries among us is an important reminder that our Church is truly ‘catholic’. The word ‘catholic’ means universal. As the Body of Christ we share in one another’s joys and we help carry one another’s burdens.
Fr. Henry comes to us from the country of Uganda, which Winston Churchill called ‘the Pearl of Africa.’ It is a beautiful country, blessed in many ways but also facing many of the challenges a developing country faces. One of the challenges facing the Church in Uganda is keeping up with the number of vocations to the priesthood and religious life! The Church in Africa is growing faster than any other place on earth and seminaries and houses of formation are bursting at the seams. I know that Father Henry will find a warm welcome among us and a generous response to the needs of the Church in the Archdiocese of Kampala.
The second of this year’s Mission Appeals will take place on the weekend of August 12-13. That weekend we will have the privilege of welcoming Sister Sally Harper of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondolet to Christ the King.
I want to extend the thanks of the parish to Stacey Hoaglin and her wonderful team of volunteers who put on this year’s Vacation Bible School. More than 100 children of the parish and their friends had the opportunity to learn about and celebrate their faith. There was joy and excitement in Monsignor Tuohy Hall!
Thank you for your many acts of kindness as I continue to ‘get my bearings’ at Christ the King. I want to express a special word of thanks to the members of the parish and school staff for all the help and patience they have shown me. It is a joy to be here!
See you at Mass!
