As we gather for our liturgies this Sunday after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Let us ask God’s blessings on all of our parish families and pray that each family will be a strong link in the parish family that is Christ the King. Our parish family is made up of 1200 individual households, each of which is a domestic church in its own right. The strength of the parish depends on the strength of each of our parish families.
We also stand at the threshold of a New Year. In just a few short hours 2018 will give way to 2019. The dawning of a new calendar year is a time of hope as we look forward to the opportunities that the Year of Our Lord, 2019, will hold for each of us and for our parish.
Many people make resolutions at the beginning of a New Year. While some folks might ridicule the idea of making these resolutions, I have always seen them as a concrete expression of hope and the healthy and desire to always do better.
As our parish family enters this New Year of grace, I would like to suggest that we turn to our Parish Mission Statement as the source of our New Year’s resolutions. Our Mission Statement is printed on the front cover of our parish bulletin each and every week. This is how it reads:
We, the people of Christ the King Parish, called to faith and salvation in Jesus Christ, strive to live the Gospel by:
• Worshipping God in Word and Sacrament;
• Growing in and sharing our faith;
• Participating in lifelong Catholic Christian education;
• Serving human and spiritual needs;
• Responsible stewardship of God’s spiritual and material gifts to us.
Growing in any one of these aspects of our parish life would ensure that 2019 would be a year of grace. Food for thought for all of us who are privileged to call Christ the King our spiritual home!
See you at Mass!
