Dear friends,
Thank you to everyone who donated blood at last weekend’s Parish Blood Drive. Blood is the gift of life and in giving blood we give the gift of life. Thank you for your generosity in sharing this gift.
Life is precious. From the moment of conception until the moment of natural death all life is to be protected and reverenced. Next Sunday, October 7, is Respect Life Sunday and we will have the opportunity to stand in support of the sanctity of human life as we take part in the Annual Life Chain. People throughout the country gather on Respect Life Sunday to stand in silent, public witness to the sanctity of all human life.
The right to life is an absolute right and all other rights are secondary to it. Each year laws are proffered in our country that afford greater protection to the right to life of animals on the endangered species list than to the child within her mother’s womb. The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision of the United States Supreme Court has divided our country in a way that few other court decisions have ever done. It unleashed the battle for the soul of America. Many battles rage around us, but none can compare to this most fundamental one.
Next Sunday parishioners of Christ the King are invited to take part in the Annual Life Chain from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm We are asked to fill the block of North Meridian Street between Saint Claire and Ninth Street. Parishioners who would like to carpool are invited to gather at 1:45 pm in the parking lot between the church and school.
As a Church we are a pro-life people. We are sometimes criticized as being more concerned about the child within the mother’s womb than the child outside the womb. That accusation, while unfair, challenges us to continually examine our consciences and place our lives always more at the service of all human life as we support our Church’s efforts to reach out to the homeless, the hungry, the unemployed and the refugees and immigrants in our midst. The Catholic Church in the United States is the number one provider of spiritual and psychological help to women who have suffered the devastating effects of abortion. The life of both mother and child are sacred.
As we mark Respect Life Sunday next week, let us recommit ourselves to grow in our respect and reverence for all human life.
See you at Mass!
