The year 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of the building of our ‘new’ parish church. When Christ the King Parish was established in 1939 by then Bishop Joseph Ritter, the basement of the rectory served as the first church. Soon after, a more permanent church was built to accommodate the growth in population that followed World War II. A painting of that white church hangs outside the sacristy.
As the area continued to grow, the white church was torn down in 1970 to make way for the church that we now call our parish home.
To mark the 50th Anniversary of the building of the new church, we will undertake several projects to embellish our parish church.
After 50 years of faithful service, many of the pews are beginning to split and show signs of wear. Duct tape has come to the rescue in the short term, but a more permanent solution is needed. The pews will be removed, section by section, and will be disassembled, re-glued and refinished. At the same time, the kneelers will be reupholstered. New carpet will be installed in the church and the main vestibule and the sanctuary floor will be retiled.
A space will be created for the choir and parish musicians on the west wall of the church in the area behind the organ where the the Kessler Blvd side entrance to the church and the second confessional are currently located. New chairs will be purchased for the Adoration Chapel.
Thanks to two generous gifts that have already been made to the parish for these projects, a “50th Anniversary Fund” has been established at Christ the King. For the next 12 months, from the Feast of the Assumption 2019 until the Feast of the Assumption 2020, parishioners are invited to make a monthly gift to the fund to enable the parish to undertake the proposed projects in the fall of 2020.
Gifts may be made to the fund by using the Capital Improvement Fund envelopes that parishioners receive each month in the mail or online by designating gifts to the Capital Improvement Fund. The remaining goal of the “50th Anniversary Fund” is $300,000.00.
For the past 50 years Christ the King Parish has been blessed to worship in a beautiful church. May our generous gifts to the “50th Anniversary Fund” enable parishioners to continue to do so well into the future!
See you at Mass!
