I write this letter on the feast of Saint Matthias, the Apostle. Jesus founded his Church on the twelve Apostles and after Judas’ defection, the Apostles gathered to choose a successor to Judas. As recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, the Apostles chose two good men who had been with Jesus from the time of his baptism at the River Jordan until his post resurrection appearances.
They then prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and cast lots. We are not certain what form that ‘casting of lots’ took, but what is clear is that the Apostles put their trust in God to provide the Church with a successor to Judas. Matthias was chosen and, as a member of the band of Apostles, faithfully witnessed to Jesus until his martyrdom.
On Pentecost Sunday, our parish will select two parishioners to serve on the Pastoral Council. The Pastoral Council is a leadership group in the parish made up of representatives from the different commissions and at-large members from the parish. Parishes choose council members in a variety of ways including parish-wide elections, appointment by the pastor and discernment of possible members by the Pastoral Council.
Last year we adopted a method of selecting at-large members for our Pastoral Council that is reminiscent of the Early Church’s selection of Matthias. Parishioners are asked to prayerfully discern their ability and willingness to serve the parish as a member of the Council and, if they feel called to this ministry, to place their name in nomination. On Pentecost Sunday the Pastoral Council will gather in prayer and then draw three names from those that have been submitted to take the place of Council members whose three-year term of service is ending.
Those who submit their names in nomination should be active members of the parish who faithfully participate in the Eucharist and who have been confirmed in their faith and are open to the Holy Spirit’s direction for Christ the King Parish.
Self-nomination forms are available at the Welcome Desk in the main vestibule of the church. A box to receive nomination forms is also available at the Welcome Desk. Pentecost Sunday fall son June 9. Nomination forms will be accepted through the weekend of June 1-2. If you feel called to this service, please fill out a nomination form. If you know someone whom you feel would be a valuable member of the Council, please encourage that person to fill out a form.
It’s not too late to schedule a time to have your picture taken for the 2019 Parish Photo Directory. The Photo Directory is a wonderful way for us to get to know one another. It’s our family album and we are all part of the family!
See you at Mass!
