Qualifications for the Parish Rate at Christ the King & Bishop Chatard High School
Who pays parish rate tuition?
Who is eligible to pay the “parish rate” of tuition at Christ the King School and Bishop Chatard High School? A resolution passed by the Christ the King Board of Total Catholic Education (currently called the School Commission) in 1990 stated that “registered and verified as regularly contributing Christ the King members will pay the parish rate of tuition….Those families who are not registered or verified as regularly contributing Christ the King members will pay the non-parish rate….New parish registrants will pay the parish rate if their previous parish certifies that they were registered and regularly contributing members.”
What does this mean for Christ the King School Families?
When a Christ the King parish family first enrolls at Christ the King School, they fill out an “application for parish rate.” This brief form asks for the date of parish registration, involvement in ministries, and a statement regarding financial contributions to the church. This completed form is
sent to the parish office for verification. If a family has not been a member of Christ the King Parish for at least 6 months, they are considered “new” parishioners and are asked to provide the name and address of their former Catholic parish. A request for certification is sent to that parish.
What are the requirements for qualifying for the parishioner rate of tuition?
For Christ the King families, there is no minimum contribution. However we are concerned with seeing a commitment to the faith through regular attendance at Mass, and an indication that the parishioner understands that a member has a responsibility to contribute financially to the parish according to his or her means. The amount is not as important as the consistency. In addition, all tuition must be up to date.
What if I give in cash?
Cash donations are acceptable; however, a parishioner must use his/her envelope in order to be identified as a donor. Anonymous cash contributions cannot be verified.
Why did the Board of Education pass this resolution?
Christ the King School teaches the Catholic Faith. It is important that parents support what the school teaches - otherwise the child will be confused and unsure about matters of faith and morals. Regular contributions verify that parents are attending church and showing their children that they support the teachings of the church and the school.
Christ the King’s tuition does not begin to cover the cost of operating the school. Since the school is an important ministry of the parish, parish families with no children in school pay the difference in cost. It is not fair to ask parishioners to subsidize members who have been unwilling to accept any financial responsibility for membership in the parish.
What does this mean for Bishop Chatard High School Families?
All of the above apply for Bishop Chatard High School families except for the required minimum contribution. Christ the King Church is assessed a yearly amount from the Archdiocese to support the Archdiocesan high schools. We require that parishioners who have children at Bishop Chatard High and do not have children at Christ the King School contribute a yearly minimum amount to the parish to qualify to receive the parishioner rate of tuition. This is to help offset the assessment from the Archdiocese. Currently the rate is $100 per month.
Hardship cases are always taken into account, but the request for consideration must come in writing, and other membership requirements must be fulfilled. The Parish Educational Review Committee reviews all requests for hardship.
Any Questions about these qualifications can be directed to Cheryl Beckerich at the parish office.
