The ushers/greeters are men and women 16 years of age and older who serve as ministers of hospitality at all liturgical functions in the church.
The ushers fill the traditional role of usher in helping members of the congregation find seats and taking up collections, but they also provide information, assist in emergencies, and insure that the church is in order after the liturgical celebration is over.
Our deepening awareness of the need to create and maintain a climate of hospitality within our Eucharistic assemblies has given new importance to the ministry of ushers. Ushers/greeters make the first official contact with those who gather for the worship ceremony. They need to put strangers at ease, welcome visitors, and help everyone experience the warmth of the community.
The usher coordinator makes every effort to schedule a particular volunteer into a team that serves at a Mass that volunteer prefers to attend. Ushers occasionally are requested to serve as ministers of hospitality at special liturgical functions.
